The Mazzei family, owners of Chianti Classico's highly esteemed Castello di Fonterutoli, took the helm at the Belguardo estate in the 1990s after recognizing the area’s potential for quality winemaking. In the years since, the Mazzei family has established Belguardo among the top producers in this exciting, fast emerging wine region.
Made with Cabernet Sauvignon and a small percentage of Cabernet Franc grapes, this powerful and elegant wine is the most important "Cru" of the Estate, the maximum expression of its native terroir.
TERROIR & VINTAGE NOTESThe Belguardo estate is located on the hills between Grosseto and Montiano, about six miles inland from Italy’s west coast. The climate is influenced by the sea, with its strong thermal currents during the spring and summer months. Low humidity, low rainfall, and a high rate of evaporation and plant transpiration all factor in producing balanced, delicious fruit.
Belguardo comprises a total of 70 hectares (173 acres). The vineyard area is planted at altitudes ranging from 70-130 meters (230-426 feet) above sea level, with south/southwest exposure. The vines are spur cordon-trained, with a planting density of 6,600 vines/ha. The well-drained soil comprises mainly of sandstone.
Grapes are hand picked from September 20th (Cabernet Franc) to
September 24th (Cabernet Sauvignon).
Fermentation took place at warm temperatures of 82-86°F. Maceration occures for 16 days.
AGINGThe wine is aged 18 months in 225L French oak barriques (70% new) with an additional 10 months in bottle.
TASTING NOTESDeep ruby red color with purple highlights. On the nose, dense, concentrated aromas of black fruits, smoke and toast. Full-bodied on the palate with firm tannins notes of dark fruit, spice and cedar linger on the lasting finish. Pairs with steaks and grilled meats, aged cheese and charcuterie.
