In the heart of Rioja Alavesa lies Campillo, a majestic Château-style winery surrounded by vineyards. The estate makes a range of expressive wines in a modern style that are powerful, rich and elegant.
Campillo opened in 1990 and is part of Grupo Faustino, one of the leading spanish wine groups. In this winery, the family patriarch, Julio Faustino Martínez, has realized two great passions of his: architecture and wine. Campillo came out of his desire to develop an architecturally intriguing and modern winery to compliment the sea of vines that surround the property. Combining natural stone with steel, granite, slate, and wood, the earth-toned winery seamlessly combines the traditional bodegas of Spain with the stately châteaux of Bordeaux.
Fifty hectares of vineyards surround the estate, sheltered by the Cantabrian Mountains in Rioja Alavesa, in the medieval town of Laguardia. The vineyards lie above 2,000ft asl and are covered in calcareous clay soil.
Longtime patrons of the arts, the Faustino family wanted to establish Campillo as a space for visual art installations. Their initiative has resulted in CAMPILLO CREATIVO, an exhibition space inside the winery. The space aims to compliment the "aesthetic, integral and functional" elements of the building and surrounding vineyards, and has already been gaining international recognition.
