Paradoxically, Italy’s most famous metodo classico sparkling wine was started with the desire to compete with the best French Champagnes. Giulio Ferrari, a Trentino native, started his venerable sparkling wine house in 1902, after studying winemaking in France. Convinced that his native region’s terroir was ideal for growing Chardonnay, he produced three of his now best-known cuvées – Ferrari Brut, Perlé and Giulio Ferrari – as blanc de blancs. This innovative approach quickly paid off. Ferrari wines consistently receive some of Italy’s top accolades, including being awarded Tre Bicchieri 22 years in a row.
TERROIR & VINTAGE NOTESWith its mountain viticulture (the Dolomites), Trentino is an area well suited to the production of sparkling wines of great elegance and complexity. Large diurnal temperature range and high altitudes ensures high acidity and freshness in the grapes. With 300 acres of vineyards, Ferrari represents the largest estate in the Trentino region.
2016 will be remembered as a difficult year in many respects, but characterized by a harvest that took place in fine weather and resulted in good quality grapes. The winter was mild and resulted in an early bud break. The end of April saw a return of significant cold weather, which caused frost damage in some of the more exposed vineyards. The month of May was characterized by frequent rainfall, long soaking and continuous vegetative development of the vines, which made pest defense very challenging. The last ten days of August saw stable weather condition, allowing the grapes to be harvested when fully ripe and with good acidity levels.
Ferrari Perlé Nero is made using the traditional metodo classico. Careful selection of only Pinot Noir grapes, harvested strictly by hand between mid-August and mid-September. After harvest, the wine undergoes a gentle pressing. Aged a minimum of 69 months on the lees.
TASTING NOTESGolden and bright appearance. The bubbles are fine and integrated. The first impact on the nose leads towards the sweetness of yellow-fleshed fruit such as peach, candied fruit and dried fruit. Notes of panettone, green coffee and salted butter are also recognizable.
With the remarkable strength of flavor and refined balance that has always characterized this label, the taste is very dynamic and the finish extremely long. The drive of the Pinot Noir and the dry persistence of this Trentodoc delight the palate and pair pleasantly with very rich dishes such as spaghetti alla carbonara.
