In 1939, David S. Taub, the “father of Pinot Grigio,” was born. Beyond introducing Pinot Grigio to America, his quest was to showcase Italy’s finest wines. He dedicated 36 years to pursuing his dream with world-renown winemakers; that effort culminated in this pure expression of Pinot Grigio from the most unique Trentino vineyards. His vision lives on with Infiné 1939. Infiné 1939 is a project over two years in the making, personally driven by Marc D. Taub, President & CEO of Taub Family Companies, in commemoration of his father David’s life-long drive to introduce America to wine, most notably Pinot Grigio from northern Italy.
Infiné means “At Last” in Italian. The name evokes a culmination of producing wines that represents the best a region can produce.
TERROIR & VINTAGE NOTESThe Pinot Grigio vineyards sit at the highest possible altitudes that the grape variety can be cultivated in Trentino. At 1300 ft asl, this is considered extreme attitudes for Pinot Grigio; however, it leads to an intensified expression of the type with pronounced aromatic and mineral components which also develop beautifully. Grapes are hand picked from two particular vineyard sites – Bleggio Superiore and Valle di Cavedine. Two particular clones of Pinot Grigio were identified by the Institute of Viticulture San Michele all’Adige that produce smaller, sparser bunches and adapt better to the climates and soils in Trentino.
WINEMAKINGThe 2015 grape harvest took place at the end of September, earlier than usual at these altitudes due to exceptional weather conditions, with seasonal temperatures well above historic averages. The bunches are carefully chosen within the vineyard and are harvested exclusively by hand. The grapes from the two vineyards are harvested separately, as they ripen at slightly different times. The must is gently pressed from whole bunches in order to prevent any color from being extracted from the skins.
TASTING NOTESIntense, pale, straw yellow color. Intensely fruity aromas on the nose reminiscent of green apple and pear enhanced with mineral and citrus notes. On the palate, a wine of substantial structure and complexity with a particularly high acidity for the variety and astounding sapidity and minerality. A full-bodied Pinot Grigio.
