BACKGROUND

For 26 generations, the Mazzei family has been producing benchmark Italian wines from their historic Castello di Fonterutoli estate in Tuscany and more recently in the Maremma, Sicily and the Veneto. The passion, commitment and expertise that goes into these expressive wines is a reflection of the Mazzei’s spirit of innovation and respect for each property’s unique terroir.

Badiola refers to a Romanesque church that sits on Castello di Fonterutoli’s estate and dates back to the 10th century. It uniquely combines the freshness and elegance of Sangiovese with the soft structure of Merlot, and the refinement of Petit Verdot.

TERROIR & VINTAGE NOTES

Grapes are sourced from Le Ripe estate vineyard, at an altitude of 1,476 - 1,673 ft a.s.l. Rocky soils are composed of decomposed limestone and sandstone.

WINEMAKING & AGEING

Grapes are hand harvested in September and fermented in in temperature-controlled tanks at 79-82˚F. Maceration occures for 12-15 days. Aged in small American oak barrels (225 lt) for 10 months, then futher refined in bottle for 5 months.

TASTING NOTES

Deep, inky purple in color. On the nose, intense aromas of red berries and cocoa. Soft and smooth on the palate, with flavors of wild blackberries and raspberries; well balanced, with great depth and a long finish.
