MAROCCOLI SINGLE VINEYARD SYRAH, SICILIA DOC
Planeta encompasses six distinct wine estates across Sicily, each one inspired and constructed in harmony with its surroundings and dedicated to its terroir. Planeta’s journey begins at Sambuca di Sicilia, on the estate owned by the family since the 1600s. Here on Italy's most enchanting island, three enthusiastic young Sicilians, Alessio, Francesca and Santi Planeta, under the guidance of Diego Planeta, began their winemaking venture in the mid-1980s. Subsequent years were spent matching the extraordinarily diverse Sicilian soils with both indigenous and international varieties. Years of careful research paid off when the Planeta wines were met with immediate critical acclaim upon introduction in the U.S. in the late 1990s.
All of the company’s activities have a single theme; environmental sustainability. Planeta engages in the use of solar panels and biomass production, principally pruning residues to produce energy, reusing and recycling of all materials used in the production cycle, and the exclusive use of recycled paper for packing and printed materials. Because the land is a collective benefit, Planeta considers it is a duty to make every effort in preserving it. Harvest occured between the 10th and 15th of September.TERROIR & VINTAGE NOTES
Syrah is a noble Mediterranean grape which gives of its best in bright dry places like Sicily. This interpretation of Syrah is produced in a modern style, respecting all the characteristics of the vine, from an extraordinary vineyard – Maroccoli at about 400 metres, in an unspoilt area. The soil is rich with pebbles and moderately chalky with abundant limey sectionsWINEMAKING
The harvesting took place between September 10th – 15th. Destalking was followed by 21 days on the skins at 25°C; after racking, malolactic fermentation follows in stainless steel and woodAGING
The wine is aged for 14 months in Allier oak barriques, 30% new.TASTING NOTES
Powerful and impenetrable, this is a wine destined for long aging. Sweet oriental spices and a fleeting recall of toasted cocoa accompany the wine in all its tasting processes, providing hints of sun-ripened black fruit, and with more wintery notes of leather and humus. An enveloping sensation recalls the consistency of velvet with a minty and black pepper finish.
Pair with marinated and grilled lamb cutlets accompanied by mint or even with an orthodox ‘parmigiana’ with smoked provola cheese.
