The Prüm family’s roots in the Mosel region of Germany date back as far as 1156, making it one the country’s preeminent winemaking dynasties. Their incredible Riesling portfolio reflects traditional winemaking practices with exceptional single vineyard designated wines in every style. Family-owned S.A. Prüm, founded in 1911 by Sebastian Alois Prüm, was in the hands of Raimund Prüm, head winemaker and Sebastian’s grandson, from 1971to 2017. Under Raimund’s leadership the property has earned a reputation as one of the most successful wineries in Germany’s celebrated Mosel wine region. Today his daughter Saskia A. Prüm is taking care of the success of the family business.
TERROIR & VINTAGE NOTES\This estate-bottled, single vineyard Riesling is produced from grapes grown in the famed Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard in Germany’s Mosel region. The age of the old vines is 130 years and they are ungrafted from original root stocks. The famed Wehlener Sonnenuhr (“sundial of Wehlen”) domain was named for the historic sundial painted on an outcrop of slate by a Prüm ancestor back in 1842. The incredibly steep Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard is comprised of layers of finely decomposed, mineral-rich Devonian gray slate. Underneath, deep-lying aquifers provide the vines with adequate water during dry periods.
WINEMAKINGSelected grapes were hand-harvested on October 21, 2015, following destemming and eight hours of skin contact. Wild yeast fermentation with 6 months fermentation in old oak barrels followed by ageing for 9 months in Mosel-Fuder. The ageing potential is 30-40 years.
TASTING NOTESOn the nose, apricot, green apple and tropical notes with slately minerality. A dry, full bodied palate, and structured wine with depth, concentrated stone fruit and minerality. Well-matched with games like wild boar, venison, pork or beef as well as rich seafood dishes. Decanting this wine for an hour is recommended and serving at 55◦ F.
