Williams and Humbert Sherries
For over 130 years, Bodegas Williams & Humbert have been producing the finest sherries and brandies as well as a diverse portfolio of spirits, utilizing one of the most traditional methods of ageing, the solera method.
Founded in 1877 by Sir Alexander Williams and Arthur Humbert, Bodega Williams & Humbert helped to establish the creation of the Jerez-Xérès-Brandy Quality Demarcation.
The Bodega is now owned by the Medina family, a local winemaking family with long roots in Sherry production. Family-owned and operated, they produce a variety of high quality sherries using the traditional solera aging method, whereby small amounts of younger wines are systematically blended with more mature wines over a period of time.
They have three lines of sherries: the Heritage Series, the Don Zoilo line, and the Rare Aged Sherries. Each tier offers expressions that range from dry to sweet profiles. The Bodegas also has one of the largest and most diverse offerings of 20 and 30 year old Rare and Very Rare age expressions.
Located in the heart of Jerez de la Frontera, the Bodega has more than 1,200 acres of vineyards and the largest wine cellar in Europe.
Jerez has a unique white soil called Albariza, composed of marine microalgae sedimentation. This chalky soil has a high content of calcium carbonate and limestone, similar to what you find in Chablis and Champagne. It’s white color reflects sunlight back to the vines and it is extremely porous, allowing for excellent water retention that is vital during the hot summer months in this region of southern Spain.
Winemaker Paola Medina and second generation of the Medina family, is a native of Sevilla who has been working with the winery in various capacities since 2001. She joined Williams & Humbert full-time as technical director and winemaker in 2010.
Paola’s experience in Sherry and dedication to promoting these beautiful wines has made her one of the region’s most important ambassadors. Decanter magazine has named her one of the top ten outstanding Spanish winemakers who symbolizes the “Sherry revolution, pooling energetic youthfulness, deep respect for sherry heritage and amazing know-how and creativity.”
